AHK-Cu vs GHK-Cu: Which Copper Peptide Actually Works for Hair?

The molecules, side by side

GHK-Cu is glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine bound to copper. AHK-Cu is alanyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine bound to copper. The only difference is the first amino acid, glycine vs alanine. Alanine is slightly larger and more lipophilic, which changes how the peptide interacts with cell receptors.

Both peptides carry copper to the cell. Once inside, the released copper participates in the same biochemistry. The difference is which cells they reach efficiently, and which receptors they activate on the way in.

What GHK-Cu does well

  • Stimulates collagen and elastin synthesis in dermal fibroblasts (the cells that make skin firm).
  • Promotes wound healing, the original 1973 use case.
  • Acts as a broad-spectrum antioxidant and DNA-repair signal in skin tissue.

If your goal is skin remodeling, GHK-Cu is the better-studied choice and the right ingredient.

What AHK-Cu does that GHK-Cu does less well

Hair follicle research from the mid-2000s onward consistently shows AHK-Cu outperforming GHK-Cu on follicle-specific endpoints:

  • Higher proliferation rate in cultured dermal papilla cells (the cells that govern hair growth).
  • Stronger upregulation of VEGF, the growth factor responsible for follicle vascularization.
  • Greater anagen-phase extension in ex vivo follicle models.

Why the difference? The alanine in AHK-Cu appears to give it better affinity for the receptors on dermal papilla cells. GHK-Cu binds them too, but less efficiently. For skin, where you want broad fibroblast activation, GHK-Cu wins. For hair, where you want targeted follicle signaling, AHK-Cu wins.

Why most products still use GHK-Cu

Three reasons. First, GHK-Cu is cheaper to source, it has been manufactured at scale for decades. Second, the regulatory dossier is larger, which simplifies brand approval. Third, copper peptide hair products are often line extensions of skincare brands, so they inherit the skincare ingredient. The result: most 'copper peptide hair serums' are repackaged skin formulas.

Practical implications for buyers

Read the ingredient list. If a hair product lists 'copper peptide' or 'copper tripeptide-1' without specifying which one, it is almost certainly GHK-Cu, that is the ingredient sold to formulators as 'copper peptide' by default. AHK-Cu, when present, is usually called out explicitly because the brand had to source it separately.

Also check concentration. Both peptides need to be present at 2–4% in a hair product to drive follicle effects. Below 1%, you are paying for a label claim.

Can you use both at once?

There is no contraindication, but there is also no published evidence that combining them outperforms a sufficient dose of AHK-Cu alone for hair. If your goal is the follicle, pick the form designed for it.
